PlanningAll steps in the process guide are important, however the planning stage is one of the most essential components. Poor planning can lead to poor implementation and lack of effectiveness. We often want to get started on something new because we are excited, however time must be spent on the planning or the result could be disastrous. When thoughtful consideration of all components in the planning stage takes place there is a higher chance of success for our students.

The TeamYou must first choose the key people who will help with the planning. The "Who Cares as Much as You Do?" document may be helpful in identifying these people.

Needs AssessmentThe needs assessment is essential! We may think we know exactly what we need to prevent bullying and youth violence in our schools, however it may just be tied to our emotions or us directly. There may be a bigger problem at hand. We want to be sure we are addressing the greatest need to make the most impact. Below are a few resources.

Setting GoalsOnce the needs assessment has been completed, it is time for our team to set realistic goals. Ask the question: "What is our desired outcome?" The CDC has many helpful tools on their website for this step, the "Goal Cards" is one I have attached below. The activity on 3 Bold Steps, the "Step by Step Road Map" is also helpful to go through as a team to be sure you aren't missing any important step.

Communicating OutOnce the team has been established, the needs assessment completed and the goals and plan set, it is important to establish a clear "pitch" of what you tell others who haven't been a part of the team. This is a quick "elevator pitch" that informs others why a new program will be implemented. Buy-in is a huge component for successful implementation, so a thoughtful response when sharing with others is important.
